All DSA staff have the opportunity to join a DSA Committee. Each Committee is guided by a Lead(s), who have developed the inaugural overview, outcomes, and membership criteria for each Committee.

Committee Topics

There are six Committees representing different functional areas.

Assessment

Lead: Christy Anthony

The Assessment Committee will provide education, support, and structure for DSA assessments both across the division and within specific units, aligning assessment to strategic goals of the division.

Outcomes
  • Identify assessment goals for the division.
  • Facilitate assessment projects across the division that align with divisional goals. 
  • Develop a clearinghouse of data and assessment resources for different areas of DSA practice.
Committee Membership

Representation from each area of practice within the division will be important to the success of the committee.

Communications

Leads: Maralee Csellar, Jay Jones, Victoria Heithaus

The Communications Committee is dedicated to establishing comprehensive, intentional, and quality communication and marketing practices for both internal and external audiences. The Committee will examine current systems and practices, develop resources, create and implement standardized processes, recommend best practices, and set expectations for the positive representation of the DSA and GW brands.

Outcomes
  • Identify and categorize all channels of communication and/or brand representation across the Division, including but not limited to:
    • mass email communications, including brand identity/graphics; 
    • websites;
    • social media accounts.
  • Identify and categorize all constituents/audiences for DSA communications.
  • Identify constituent needs and satisfaction with regard to DSA communication.
  • Develop best practices for communication and marketing for all units and begin to implement these practices in Spring 2023 using identified systems and templates.
Committee Membership

Members interested in communication and marketing. No more than 12 staff members. Preferred makeup would include one representative from each DSA Unit who are already involved with communication and marketing for their unit.

Fundraising

Leads: Andy Sonn, Andre Julien

The Fundraising Committee is committed to identifying funding sources and opportunities to support our mission to build a greater sense of community and connection to GW, and creating overall experiences that students feel are positive and valuable. 

Outcomes
  • Analyze past fundraising and donor data to create a strategic plan to increase the number and amount of donations to DSA areas. 
  • Perform a SWOT analysis and strategic plan for DSA fundraising and grant-writing. 
  • Educate DSA colleagues and key stakeholders, especially students, on fundraising policies, protocols, and promising practices.
  • Leverage GW experts to inform our work to secure additional funding for DSA activities, facilities, and events.
Committee Membership

Staff members who are interested in supporting these short and long term goals.

Short Term

  • Analyze past three years' giving history.
  • Create a fundraising SWOT analysis.
  • Identify short and long term areas of opportunity for DSA fundraising.
  • Offer fundraising education sessions for DSA colleagues and student organizations.

Long Term

  • Create case statements for DSA areas that need support and that address donors’ interests.
  • Plan and manage Alumni & Families Weekend engagement activities.
  • Prepare formal case statements by July 1 (when GW's next President assumes their role).
  • Work on a comprehensive case statement for University Student Center (USC), and Lerner Health and Wellness Center, and other key areas with the programming committee. 
  • Identify grant opportunities and work on grant proposals for DSA

Staff Experience

Leads: Colette Coleman, Brian Joyce

The Staff Experience Committee is committed to providing learning opportunities to develop skills and knowledge for all of our team members through professional and personal development, finding ways to honor and recognize outstanding contributions to our GW community, and highlighting opportunities of continued learning.  The Committee prioritizes the DSA values in its work.   

Outcomes
  • Create and secure professional development opportunities for team members.
  • Create consistent and relevant events in which all DSA members feel welcome to build community and interoffice synergy.
  • Prioritize diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) learning opportunities and outcomes.
  • Highlight and organize events designed by the greater GW and Student Affairs community Incorporate and amplify DSA offices’ work and events around learning and development.
  • Highlight staff achievements and exemplary work to recognize staff through a variety of ways.
  • Create onboarding and exiting procedures for professional and graduate staff.

Strategic Planning

Leads: Colette Coleman, Giulietta Versiglia, Seth Weinshel

The Strategic Planning Committee is dedicated to facilitating and creating frameworks to guide strategic conversation, planning and direction of our division across teams and units.  The Committee will work through identifying the division’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. By analyzing the internal and external environments, the Committee will help present comprehensive risks, challenges and opportunities across the division to help leadership establish priorities and set goals.  The Committee will identify DSA’s goals and objectives for the next five years.

Outcomes
  • Work with the Assessment Committee to collect, represent and integrate perspectives across the units and teams.
  • Create planning process Market Basket analysis and research.
  • Identify student satisfaction, demands and needs Implementing planning, leadership, communication, assessment, drafting and logistic tasks and activities.
  • Deliver SWOT, inputs (staff and students) and market analysis.
  • Create a working document with strategic initiatives and action items for the determined timeframe (3 to 5 years)

Student Staff Experience

Lead: Rebekka Christie

The Student Staff Experience Committee will assess the current student staff experience in on campus jobs. 

Outcomes
  • Assess student worker satisfaction with achieving the following listed Professional Competencies based on their student employment experience: 
    • critical thinking and creative problem solving skills;
    • communication skills; teamwork and collaboration skills;
    • leadership skills;
    • professionalism skills;
    • global perspective skills;
    • technology and information management skills;
    • career management skills.
  • Assess student worker satisfaction with their work hours and wages.
  • Assess student worker satisfaction with job opportunities on campus.
  • Assess student worker satisfaction with finding staff/faculty mentors in their work spaces.
  • Assess student worker satisfaction with diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in their work space.
  • Assess how valuable student workers found their jobs on campus to be in terms of discovering their career path, obtaining post-graduate employment or finding post-graduate course of study.
