The George Washington University (GW) defines first-generation college students as those whose parents did not complete a four-year, baccalaureate degree. Recognizing the diverse experiences of first-gen students, GW offers various resources and programs to support their academic and social integration.
A key initiative is First Gen United (FGU), the university's sole student organization dedicated to first-generation students. FGU provides a supportive community, organizes events, and offers resources tailored to the unique challenges faced by first-gen students. Additionally, GW encourages faculty and staff to become First Forward Advocates, promoting awareness and support for first-generation students across campus.
Foggy Bottom Plan B is an independent organization dedicated to providing free and private emergency contraception to the Foggy Bottom community. While FB Plan B is composed of individuals from the George Washington community, our organization is not affiliated with the university and provides emergency contraception to all in the area. FB Plan B is not a medical organization, and its members are not medical professionals. We only operate as a distributor of emergency contraception.
The GW Art Therapy Clinic is a training facility partnered with the GW Graduate Art Therapy Program providing confidential, quality art therapy services to children, teens and adults from the community. A typical art therapy session lasts 45–50 minutes, although occasionally the clinician may find extended sessions to be helpful. Most clients are seen in weekly 1:1 individual therapy sessions with a consistent student therapist throughout the academic year. The clinic also offers free workshops and groups that are open to the community both in-person and virtually.
Students, parents, faculty, and staff can identify students that may need additional support through the CARE Team’s online form. The CARE Team is a cross-departmental support system that recognizes that student concerns are often multi-faceted. Students are connected to resources through inter-departmental collaboration to provide them with appropriate and personalized outreach. The Behavioral Intervention (BIT) is a multi-disciplinary group at George Washington University that is overseen by CARE.
GW Cares Student Assistance Fund
The GW Cares Student Assistance fund was created to support students who are in immediate need of temporary, short-term, financial assistance to cover essential expenses due to an emergency. Each application is reviewed individually by designated staff with urgency toward time-sensitive student needs. The Office of Student Financial Assistance is consulted to verify prioritization of greatest student need.
GW Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)
CAPS offers in-person and virtual, individual and group counseling for all undergraduate and graduate students. All sessions are free, confidential, and goal-oriented. Additional services include affinity spaces for students who share common identities, backgrounds, and experiences; skill-building workshops for anxiety, depression, and the cultural forces that impact wellbeing; and other experiences and presentations tailored to your mental health needs.
GW Medical Faculty Association Abortion Care & Pregnancy Options
The GW Medicine OB/GYN Center for Pregnancy Loss and Options provides abortion care and contraception in a private, comfortable, and sensitive environment. Offers care for patients seeking elective abortion, treatment for miscarriage or fetal death, and pregnancy termination due to health problems of the fetus or pregnant person. Many insurance companies will cover the cost of an abortion, including The George Washington University Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) through Aetna Student Health.

OSS teams oversee the implementation of academic processes and policies from registration through graduation, special programs, and support services, to ensure that students have the resources they need to thrive in this dynamic learning environment.
The Student Health Center (SHC) provides short-term psychiatric treatment and referral services to GW students. Services are provided by telemedicine or in person. Undergraduate, graduate, and professional students who are actively enrolled in at least one credit are eligible for psychiatric services.
