The Store is a student-run food pantry at the George Washington University (GW) that is managed by the Store student organization and the Division for Student Affairs providing resources and support for students living with food insecurity. Over the past couple of years, the awareness of this need has increased on college campuses as students make hard choices about how to spend their limited resources. The Store was founded on the principles of Faith, Trust, and Respect and these values guide our work every day. Our mission is to address student need at GW by offering food and other resources to ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed.
District House Room B121
2121 H Street, NW
Washington, DC 20052
Hours of Operation:
Daily from 6:00 am to 2:00 am
Volunteers will be in the space from 12 noon - 2 pm every Saturday and every other Friday throughout the year.
Students who would like to access the pantry should log in to the Store application and complete the prompts. The application will prompt you to enter your NetID and password. However we allow shoppers to remain completely anonymous out of respect for their privacy and we will not receive the names of anybody who signs up for the Store. This privacy extends to the shoppers’ experience in the Store as we do not staff it at any time. We have faith that every shopper needs this resource and trust them to take what they need and leave enough for other shoppers.
Shoppers access the pantry by using their GWorld cards to tap into the Store and shoppers are free to choose from a variety of items that meet their needs. Once a shopper has made their selections, they are asked to record this information on an iPad in The Store or via their mobile device, so we have a sense of what our students prefer and can stock the most needed items.
The Store would not be able to operate without the valued help of our volunteers and The Store student organization that recruits, trains, and manages our volunteers. Volunteers stock shelves, clean the Store, pick up and deliver food from our partners, and manage the overall upkeep of the Store. In order to begin volunteering at the Store, students must complete a mandatory online training and sign a confidentiality agreement. This online training allows Store volunteers to learn more about our mission, our history of fighting food insecurity on campus, and outlines their duties and impact as volunteers for a resource that many of their peers rely on. We welcome both student organizations and groups of students to participate in volunteering!
For group volunteer opportunities, please email [email protected].
The Store has been made possible through the generous philanthropic support of GW families, alumni, faculty, staff, students, and friends. We are extremely thankful for their support and welcome additional philanthropic donations to assist in providing this needed resource to GW students. Gifts will allow us to purchase fresh produce through Hungry Harvest and Whole Foods as well as supplemental resources from GroceryU and many of our other partners.
If you would like to provide philanthropic support of the Store, please donate through the university.
If you have any of these items to donate, please bring them to Colonial Crossroads on the 5th floor of the Marvin Center and leave them with the Front Desk.
We are always in need of grocery bags for students to use when they visit the Store.
Many students need new or lightly used kitchen items to include:
- Pots and pans
- Spatulas, wooden spoons, etc.
- Aluminum foil
- Ziploc bags, etc.
- Pencils and pens
- Notebooks and binders
- Post-Its, etc.
