The Store is a student-run food pantry at the George Washington University (GW) that is managed by GW Class Council and the Center for Student Engagement, providing free food items for students struggling with food insecurity. Over the past couple of years, this need has increased on college campuses and large populations of students often skip meals and go hungry because they cannot always afford enough to eat. Our mission is to alleviate student hunger at GW by offering food items to ensure that every student has enough to eat.
How We Work:
Students who would like to access the pantry must complete the Store Access Request Form. Once a request has been submitted, we will contact students to let them know when they have access to the pantry. If they so choose, students may remain relatively anonymous by providing only their email and GWID on the form.
Students access the pantry by using their GWorld cards to tap into the Store. On each trip, students are free to choose from a variety of food items that meet their needs. Once a student has chosen food, they are asked to record this on a computer to ensure an up-to-date and accurate inventory. This inventory also allows us to get a better sense of what food items our students prefer, so that we know what to keep in stock.
Students may want to refer to the Capital Area Food Bank for recipes and information to help build healthy meals with the food provided in the Store.

How to Help:
The Store would not be able to operate without the valued help of our volunteers and we are proud to partner with Class Council on this initiative. Class Council will recruit, train, and manage the Store's daily volunteers. Volunteers stock shelves, clean the Store, pick up and deliver food from our partners, and manage the overall upkeep of the Store. Volunteers will work in the Store from 12 noon - 2 pm daily. Volunteers are required to complete one Volunteer Training Session before they may begin work in order to learn more about us and how they can make a difference on campus.
We welcome student organizations and groups of students! Sign up to volunteer today!
The Store has been made possible through the generous philanthropic support of GW families, alumni, and friends. We are extremely thankful for their support and welcome additional philanthropic donations to assist in providing this needed resource to GW students. Gifts will allow us to purchase fresh produce through GW's Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program with the Lancaster Farm Fresh Cooperative and will expand the offerings of the Store. If you would like to provide philanthropic support of the Store, please donate through the university.
Bags: We are in need of grocery bags for students to use when they visit the Store. If you have any extra paper bags that you are willing to donate, please bring them to Colonial Crossroads on the 5th floor of the Marvin Center and leave them with the Front Desk.
Kitchen supplies: Many students need new or lightly used kitchen items to include:
- pots and pans
- spatulas, wooden spoons, etc.
- aluminum foil
- Ziploc bags, etc.
If you have any of these items to donate, please bring them to the Store on the B level of District House and leave them in the box to the left of the door.
